Enhanced Oil Recovery Leader

Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is a set of techniques used to increase the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field. Traditional production methods, such as primary and secondary recovery, typically recover a fraction of the available oil. EOR aims to increase this fraction by using methods that alter the original properties of the oil, allowing for an increase in extraction efficiency.

EOR techniques include:

  • Thermal recovery: involves the introduction of heat to reduce the viscosity of the oil. Common methods include steam injection and combustion.

  • Gas injection: uses gases like carbon dioxide or nitrogen to either mix with the oil and reduce its viscosity or to push the oil towards a production well.

  • Chemical injection: involves injecting substances such as polymers, surfactants, or alkaline chemicals into the reservoir to help free the trapped oil by reducing surface tension.

  • Other methods: such as microbial EOR, which uses microorganisms to affect the oil's properties, and seismic EOR, which uses seismic waves to increase oil production.

EOR is particularly useful in mature oil fields where primary and secondary recovery methods have declined in effectiveness. It is also a critical technology for maximizing the extraction of oil as the global demand continues to rise, and the easy-to-reach oil supplies decline. As EOR technology advances, it remains an increasingly important field for research and investment.
